I keep looking for that verse that says it’s my responsibility to choose between the lesser of two evils. As if a little evil is okay as long as someone says they stand for good. But the Bible is clear. A little leaven leavens the whole batch of dough. There is only darkness and light. No such thing as a little darkness. Light and darkness don’t become compatible just because we want them to. The light of Jesus expels all darkness.
Compromise isn’t the solution. It’s the problem. When we stop calling out evil because they seem to be on “our side,” the next thing you know, we become compromised. Just a little foul language. Just a little coarse joking. Just a little adultery. Greed. Pride. Anger. Slander. Lying. Things we would condemn in the “other side” suddenly become things we are willing to excuse to “win.”
And that’s the danger. It’s not a slippery slope. It’s a steep cliff that we should stay far away from. Jesus said we would know them by their fruit, not their rhetoric or political party.
I’m not saying don’t vote. I’m not suggesting we bury our heads in the sand. We live in a broken, imperfect world, and sometimes we have to make difficult decisions.
But making a difficult decision is very different from defending what we know is wrong because we think it serves a greater good. You can’t overcome evil with lesser evil. You can only overcome evil with good.
Romans 12:21 (NET)
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
We don’t have to pretend evil is good to participate in or exercise our rights as citizens of an earthly kingdom or government. But there is zero tolerance for darkness in the Kingdom Jesus proclaimed. The Bible doesn’t tell us to excuse sin just because someone promises to advance righteousness.
It tells us to walk in the light. To let our light shine so others see our good works and give glory to the Father.
If we’re willing to compromise what Jesus taught and lived to get what we want, maybe we need to ask ourselves whose side we are really on.
Compromise doesn’t make evil good. It just makes evil easier to ignore, excuse, and accept.
Whose side are we really on? Let there be light!✌🏼
Matthew 5:16 (NET)
In the same way, let your light shine before people, so that they can see your good deeds and give honor to your Father in heaven.
2 Corinthians 6:14-18 (NET)
14 Do not become partners with those who do not believe, for what partnership is there between righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship does light have with darkness?
15 And what agreement does Christ have with Beliar? Or what does a believer share in common with an unbeliever?
16 And what mutual agreement does the temple of God have with idols? For we are the temple of the living God, just as God said, “I will live in them and will walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.”
17 Therefore “come out from their midst, and be separate,” says the Lord, “and touch no unclean thing, and I will welcome you,
18 and I will be a father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters,” says the All-Powerful Lord.
Ephesians 5:6-11 (NET)
6 Let nobody deceive you with empty words, for because of these things Godʼs wrath comes on the sons of disobedience.
7 Therefore do not be partakers with them,
8 for you were at one time darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of the light -
9 for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness, and truth -
10 trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.
11 Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.
